Accommodation
Murchison River Lodge is situated directly on the southern bank of the River Nile overlooking Uganda’s largest national park, Murchison Falls. The lodge has a very friendly flair and guests immediately sense that the owners have put their heart and soul into the design and construction of the lodge. The electricity comes from a solar system, which is also used to power the large pool.
Guests can choose between the larger thatched cottages and the smaller thatched safari tents of which some are located close to the river and are then called river tents. All tents have their own porch with a table and chairs. The thatched cottages are two-story, with two single beds downstairs and a double bed on a mezzanine floor, en-suite bathroom, veranda with hammock, and are well suited for families of up to four people.
The Victoria Nile (which belongs to the White Nile) forces its way through a gap in the rocks, only 7 m wide, and tumbles 43 m to the base of Murchison Falls. The waterfalls can be easily visited from the lodge by boat or vehicle.
Paraa (home of the hippo) is the central area of the park. The areas on both sides of the river are connected by a ferry that must be used when visiting the park. In 2019, a bridge was built which will facilitate access to the park.
Travel time from Entebbe about 5,5 hours. Flights take about 1 hour to Pakuba or Bugungu Airstrip, from there it is a 45 minutes road transfer to the lodge.

The park is bisected by the Nile River and includes savanna (grassland) in the north and more forested areas in the south. Wildlife sightings are easier and game drives usually more rewarding in the savannas. The Victoria Nile (which belongs to the White Nile) forces its way through a gap in the rocks, only 7 m wide, and tumbles 43 m to the base of Murchison Falls. A visit to Murchison Falls includes an exiting boat ride to the falls, followed by a walk on a dirt track that first leads along the water and then climbs up to the top of the waterfall. Murchison Falls is Uganda's only National Park where visitors can spot the Big-5. Buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard are often to be seen especially north of the Nile. Rhinos were extinct in Uganda, but have been reintroduced in the south of the park. It is also one of the few places where the endangered Rothschild's Giraffe is still found.

If the water level and the condition of the trail allow, you disembark and start walking. The dirt track leads along the water, allowing beautiful views of the mighty falls. After a steep climb you reach the top of the falls where your guide expects your already, ready to serve drinks and a little picnic.

Especially the chimpanzees are a magnet for many visitors to Uganda. About 1500 chimpanzees live in Kibale Forest, as well as the largest population of colobus monkeys in East Africa.Visits to the forest are arranged in such a way that once in the morning (8 am) and once in the afternoon (2 pm) a group of six guests is led by the rangers from the Kanyanchu Visitor Center into the forest to track down the chimpanzees. The trek usually takes two to three hours and is not strenuous. The time spent with the chimpanzees is limited to one hour. If you want to spend more time with the chimps, you can consider booking the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience and you get to be with the primates all day long. However, as this chimp group is not yet fully habituated, chimp sightings may be limited. Permits for the chimpanzees must be booked in advance.

You will visit one of these chimpanzee groups today. The trek starts at Kanyanchu Visitor Centre and usually takes two to four hours of easy trekking with your rangers. The actual time with the chimpanzees is limited to one hour.
