Luwi River
South Luangwa NP
The combination of Luwi & Nsolo offers a romantic South Luangwa walking and bush experience. A sleep-out is also possible (mattress plus mosquito net on the riverbed plus ranger dinner) between Nsolo and Luwi. Guests choosing this option leave camp at nightfall, sleep out on the riverbed and continue the journey to camp next morning. This walk may include encounters with lion, elephant, hippo and buffalo.

Luwi Bush Camp South Luangwa National Park Zambia
3 nights

Accommodation Luwi Camp is the most remote of all Norman Carr Safaris’ (current time + tide) bush camps. With only four safari tents built under shade-giving trees a short distance from the dry Luwi River riverbed, it is a very private affair. Luwi offers a very authentic "bush-feeling", a unique experience for adventure seekers and nature lovers. In the evenings, guests gather around the bar or around the camp fire; dinner is usually served under the stars.

Location Luwi Bush Camp is situated in the northern part of South Luangwa National Park on the dry Luwi River riverbed, some 23 km from the Luangwa River. It is exceedingly remote. Vehicle transfer time from Mfuwe Airport is approximately 3 hours.

South Luangwa
South Luangwa National Park is regarded as one of the most wildlife-rich in the whole of Africa. The Luangwa River is the 9050 km² park’s lifeblood and marks large stretches of its eastern border.

Most camps here are located close to the river, as this is where animals come to quench their thirst during the dry season. The dry season is also when the water level reaches its lowest point, exposing large sandbanks. The residual pools support high concentrations of crocodile and hippo, which tussle for the remaining water. When the wet season arrives in November, the water level rises rapidly, and the Luangwa becomes a raging torrent – it has even been known to take the odd camp with it. The walking safari is South Luangwa’s speciality, and is available at every camp. At 500 m above sea level, the park is very hot during the summer months. If you’re not a fan of intense heat and don’t like walking safaris, then it’s best to visit earlier.

The Muchinga Escarpment, a natural boundary to the west, prevents the migration of animals. The park is bordered by the river to the east and extends into the Nsefu Sector, which stretches out from the other side of the river.

The park’s entrance gate is located at the town of Mfuwe, which has a small airport (this is where guests are picked up). Many of the less expensive camps are located outside the park, close to the main bridge. In our opinion, the central sector around Mfuwe Lodge suffers a bit from traffic coming in over the bridge. For this reason, we recommend that you avoid the main bridge and visit the southern sector, the northern sector or Nsefu sector to experience quieter safaris.

Luwi River Camping
Sleep under the stars  Luwi River
If you really want to experience something unforgettable, spend a night camping out under the stars under the supervision of the staff. Dinner will be prepared on an open fire and one night falls, the stars will be as close as you may have never experienced before. Hearing the wildlife move around you and maybe hear a lion roar in the distance are moments you will never forget.

On foot Walk to Nsolo Bush Camp
Nsolo Bush Camp South Luangwa National Park Zambia
2 nights

Accommodation Nsolo Bush Camp is another intimate bush camp by Norman Carr (current time + tide) with just five rooms. Nsolo is local word meaning „honey guide“, a small bird whose call leads the way to wild bees.

The camp is quite remote and traffic is very rare. The dry Luwi riverbed is situated right in front of the camp and it is hard to imagine how much water flows here during the rainy season, leaving this area completely impassable. Built a good distance apart, the thatched chalets sit slightly elevated upon wooden platforms. The open-air bathrooms are simple, but very comfortable and well made. One of the guest rooms stands alone, in the middle there is the main area with bar/lounge/dining and on the other side the rest of the rooms are lined up along the dry riverbed.

Location Nsolo Camp is situated in the Northern part of South Luangwa National Park on the dry riverbed of the Luwi River some 15km from the Luangwa River. Travel time from Mfuwe Airport is approximately 2,5 hours.
